Mental Health --Introduction and Definition

According to Medilexicon's medical dictionary, mental health is: "Emotional, behavioral, and social maturity or normality; the absence of a mental or behavioral disorder; a state of psychological well-being in which one has achieved a satisfactory integration of one's instinctual drives acceptable to both oneself and one's social milieu; an appropriate balance of love, work, and leisure pursuits." 

According to the WHO (World Health Organization), mental health is: "... a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community."

Mental Health, Emergency and Crisis Counseling and Contact Information

At Prairie View A&M University, assistance is available for students experiencing mental health concerns.  During office hours, 8:00a.m. to 7:00p.m. on Monday –Wednesday, and 8:00a.m. – 5:00p.m. on Thursday –Friday, please call Student Counseling Services at (936) 261-3564 or come to our office located is Suite 226 Owens-Franklin Health Center for assistance.

Some of the professional staff in Student Counseling Services are a part of the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) and the Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention (RSVP) Program for PVAMU students. During regular university hours, the Student Counseling Service’s staff is available for crisis counseling.  For after-hours emergencies, an on-call counselor will be available by calling the crisis hotline number at (936) 553-0990 or call the PVAMU Police Department at (936) 261-1375 or 4-911, or visit the Emergency Room at the closest hospital.
