The African American Library at the Gregory School- Houston, Texas

Our doors officially opened on Saturday, November 14, 2009. The library is housed in the Edgar M. Gregory School, which served as the first public school for African Americans in Houston. As the first library of its kind in Houston and one of the few African American libraries in the country, the Gregory School serves as a resource to preserve, promote, and celebrate the rich history and culture of African Americans in Houston, the surrounding region, and the African Diaspora.

This historic building was reconditioned to serve as a repository for use by historians, researchers, and the general public. The African American Library at the Gregory School is the newest of three special collections operated by the Houston Public library. The library provides an incomparable variety of resources including reference books, rare books, archival materials, exhibits, artifacts, oral histories, and innovative programs. National Institute for Genealogical Studies

Genealogical research is a satisfying pastime for the family historian and a rewarding occupation for the professional genealogist. To support the needs of both amateur family historians and aspiring professional genealogists for reliable and comprehensive education we have designed a series of courses (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced and Electives) leading to various Certificates in Genealogical Studies with specialization in various countries. The National Institute for Genealogical Studies provides web-based courses for both family historians and professional genealogists. Students should understand that the use of the term 'professional' is not narrowly related to those genealogists who offer research services for hire. The term professional is being used to describe professionalism in all aspects of genealogy. Professional genealogists must ensure the application of recognized standards to any and all endeavors.
