How Do I Manage Broken Links?

Below are links reported to our Link Checking program as broken or unreachable. As you evaluate each one, either Dismiss or Exclude it, and the links will disappear from the report until the page(s) they live on are scanned again.

Links in Database, Link, and Book Assets on recently-visited LibGuides pages are checked continually. If you dismiss a link from this report, it is not re-checked for 7 days, even if pages containing the link are visited. Links with the Proxy option enabled are not checked, as there's no way for our checker to log in / verify a page is displayed.

  • Proxy Tips: Add your proxy prefix in Admin > System Settings, then enable it for database assets as required rather than adding the proxy string as a part of an asset’s URL.
  • Embedding your proxy prefix in the URL field may result in a false positive.
  • For best results, add an Exclusion for your Proxy prefix

Dismiss links from this report by clicking the Dismiss icon on the left. Want to exclude a link from further checking? Click the “Add Exclusion” icon to send a link to the Exclusions tab. Fix links in assets you own by clicking the Edit link in the Asset column.

Use the Edit option in the Asset column to edit a broken link right from this screen.

Why am I seeing links that aren't broken in this report (a.k.a. false positives)? We can't fix these issues, but this'll help you understand why they appear.

  • When our server pinged that URL, the server hosting that page really was down.
  • When our server pinged that URL, the server hosting that page was so busy serving other requests that our request timed out.
  • The company / organization who owns the server set it up to refuse any connections from spiders, crawlers, etc. to save bandwidth / resources.
  • The company / organization who owns the server incorrectly set up their server response codes, meaning the code returned was not an accurate one. (Their server told us the page doesn't exist, when it does.)
