Entrepreneurship: Funding & Grants

Types of Funding

Entrepreneurs have many different options for funding their ventures.

  • Bank loans
    • Bank loans are the most common type of funding for entrepreneurs.
    • Traditional bank loans or lines of credit can provide financing for small businesses.
    • May require collateral and a good credit history, but will often offer lower interest rates in comparison to alternative lending options.
  • Self-Funding
    • Using personal savings, credit cards, or revenue generated by the business to fund the business.
    • Allows entrepreneurs to maintain full control and ownership.
    • May limit the growth of the business.
  • Grants
    • Government agencies, non-profit organizations, and private foundations offer grants to support specific types of business.
    • May be difficult to find grants related to your business.
  • Venture capital
    • Institutional investors who provide funding to start-ups in exchange for equity.
    • Many venture capital firms invest large amounts of money in high-growth potential businesses, often in technology or innovation-driven industries.
  • Angel Investor
    • An angel is a high net-worth individual who provides capital in exchange for equity.
    • May also offer mentorship or industry connections along with the funding.
  • Crowd Funding
    • This entails raising money from a large number of individuals through online platforms.
    • Can take various forms including reward -based, equity, or debt crowd funding.

Each funding option has advantages and disadvantages. Entrepreneurs often use a combination of funding sources to meet their financial needs and goals.
