POSC 2341 Scope and Methods in Political Science: Political Science Research: Scope and Methods approach to library researching

This class will discuss many of the techniques used in systematic study of political issues. The goal of the course is to provide students with a broader understanding of social science methodology and assist them in becoming informed.

Skills to collecting the literature review in Political Science

 

  • The process to conduct library research in the SCOPE and METHODS of Political Science.
  • RESEARCH: Meriam Webster Dictionary defines investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories or laws in the light of new facts, or practical application of such new or revised theories or laws.
  • SCOPE: Meriam Webster Dictionary defines- range of operation. The extent to which the research area will be explored in library researching builds to understand all the different SCOPES of materials you can evaluate:  Domestic and International Resources: Scholarly/ Peer-reviewed journal articles; Newspapers, Books, Conference Reports, Trade Publications, Magazines. Formats: Online and Print Resources.
  • METHODS: Meriam Webster Dictionary defines a systematic procedure, technique, or mode of inquiry employed by or proper to a particular discipline or art. The extent to which the research area will be explored in library researching builds to understand the many research methods that was used to gather the data in the literature.
  • Goal in library researching is to think systematically about how many different types of research topics/ keyword approaches can be used in collecting political science literature.
  • Evaluating the literature in the realm of what you find of interest OR relate the topic to your degree.
  • Critically evaluate the research at hand and build the skills to argue the literature of other researchers/authors.
