Coaching Staff

Head Coach--Byron Smith

Smith has experience in all levels of basketball across the globe.  Prior to Prairie View A&M, Smith was an entrepreneur as he ran a business which consisted of him coaching high performance skills and fundamentals programs in the Houston area.

Collegiately, Smith spent one season (2009-10) at Texas Southern and helped the Tigers advance to the championship round of the SWAC Tournament for the first time since 2003.  Before coming to TSU, Smith served as an assistant coach at Texas A&M and helped lead the Aggies to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in addition to securing a pair of nationally ranked recruiting classes.

Smith also served as the head coach of the highly-successful Houston Swoosh AAU program for three seasons. Prior to that, he was the head coach of the Harlem Globetrotters in 2002-03.

In 2001-02, he served as an assistant coach at McClennan Community College in Waco, helping the team to the regional finals. In 2000-01, he was the interim head coach at Texas Southern. Smith was the director of basketball operations at his alma mater, the University of Houston, under Clyde Drexler from 1998-00.

Smith was a standout player at UH from 1989-91, twice earning All-Southwest Conference honors under Coach Pat Foster. Prior to that, he was an all-conference player at Tyler Junior College in 1988-89 and played at Northwestern State in 1987-88.

A native of Bossier City, La., Smith earned all-state honors as a senior at Airline High School after leading the state in scoring with a 30.6 average.

After graduating from UH in 1991, Smith played professional basketball overseas for six seasons, including four years in Australia. He also played in Turkey and Greece.

Landon Bussie, Assistant Coach

Landon Bussie is in his third season as an assistant coach for the Prairie View A&M Panthers.  Bussie lasted served as an assistant on the women's side for one season and was involved with the day-to-day operations of the program, with a special emphasis on recruiting and guard development.

Bussie played an integral part of the development of Zachary Hamilton, who became a Top 10 scorer in Panther Basketball history. Last season the Panthers won 11 of the final 14 games and advanced to the SWAC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2015.

While on the women's staff, Bussie played a key role in the development of guard Jeanette Jackson during the 2014-15 campaign as she finished as the SWAC's Player of the Year, scoring and assists leader while also finishing in the SWAC’s Top 10 in six statistical categories.  Alexus Parker also flourished under his watch as Parker doubled her scoring average after the midway point of the  season and finished as the top perimeter player in both field goal percentage and rebounding in SWAC play. As a team, the Lady Panthers captured a pair of non-conference wins over Houston and Sam Houston State. 

Prior to his time at Prairie View A&M, Bussie spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the Xavier University of Louisiana men’s basketball team, and completed two years as a graduate assistant.  At Xavier, Bussie helped guide the squad to three Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Regular-Season Conference Championships (2012, 2013, and 2014), with four consecutive appearances at the NAIA National Championship Tournament. In addition, six Gold Rush players added all-conference honors to their resumes' during Bussie’s tenure.

Bussie was a two-year letterman as a forward for the men’s basketball team at Xavier University of Louisiana, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2010. He later earned a master’s degree in educational leadership in 2014.

A native of Baltimore, Md., Bussie is a graduate of Woodlawn High School and went on to play two seasons for Livingstone College of the CIAA (NCAA Division II) before transferring to Xavier.

Bussie is the son of Loretta Bussie and the late Gerald Bussie and has two siblings, brother, Gerald, and sister Asya. Asya was an All-American standout at West Virginia University before being drafted by the Minnesota Lynx as the 15th-overall pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft.

Jared Lyons, Assistant Coach

Jared Lyons enters his second season as the assistant coach for Prairie View A&M men’s basketball after being named on August 1, 2017.

Lyons organizes the day-to-day activities of the program, coordinate all travel, food and hotel arrangements needed throughout the season. In addition to assisting with administrative needs, game film exchange, and handling video coordinator duties for the Panthers.

 Lyons, who played one season at the University of Houston (2005-06), has been an assistant basketball coach on the high school, junior college, and collegiate level. Last season he an assistant coach at Jacksonville College, assisting with game strategies, practice plans, player development and game film.

 Prior to his stint here at PVAMU in 2016-2017 Lyons was an assistant coach at Jacksonville College, Cameron University (2015-16), Huston-Tillotson (2014-15), Fort Scott Community College (2011-12), and at Lutheran South Academy and Episcopal High School (2009-11).

Lyons earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology- Sports Administration in 2008 from the University of Houston. He recently completed his Masters in Education -Sports Administration at Concordia University (Texas) in May of 2018

Wendell Moore, Assistant Coach

Wendell Moore is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Prairie View A&M men's basketball program. In his first year in the program, he helped the Panthers to a 12-6 mark in SWAC play and aided the development of J.D. Wallace, who became a second-team All-SWAC selection.

Moore previously spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Butler County Community College in El Dorado, KS. During his tenure at one of the most competitive conferences in the country, Moore helped Butler finish in two consecutive final four appearances in the conference tournament.  Moore has previously served as an assistant coach at three NCAA Division I programs – Tulsa, UMKC and Florida Atlantic. Moore spent two years at Tulsa under head coach Danny Manning where they won the 2013 Conference USA Championship . Before that, he spent four years at Missouri-Kansas City from 2008 to 2012. He also spent two years as an assistant to Rex Walters at Florida Atlantic from 2006 to 2008.

Before moving to Florida, Moore served as an assistant coach at Redlands Community College in El Reno, Okla., from 2004-06.  During his two-year stint, the Cougars posted a 50-10 overall record, and they were the regional championship runner-up in 2005.  He coached four student-athletes to junior college all-America honors and his team posted the top grade point average (3.43) in the nation.

Prior to joining the collegiate ranks, Moore spent five seasons as the head coach at Wyandotte High School, where he competed against the top prep teams in Kansas City, Kan.  In 2004, he guided the Bulldogs to a 14-7 overall record and all five of his starters went on to receive college basketball scholarships.  One of his players, Keith “Boo” Richardson, was a 5A all-State selection before going on to be a First Team Junior College all-American.

Moore played collegiate basketball for two seasons at Georgia Southern, where he helped lead the 1991-92 squad to the Trans American Athletic Conference (TAAC) Championship and the NCAA Tournament with a school record 25 wins.  During the historic season, he helped the Eagles set school records for single-season steals (92) and three-point field goal percentage (.470).  For his play, Moore earned TAAC all-conference honors, and he was named Chevrolet’s Most Valuable Player at the NCAA Tournament.

Moore got his first college exposure as a player at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, where he started on the nation’s pre-season No. 1 team as a sophomore in 1989-90.  Moore’s success as a player began at Wichita South High School, where he earned all-state honors after helping his team to an undefeated season en route to the 1988 6A Kansas State Championship.

A native of Wichita, Kan., Moore completed his associate’s degree in business administration at Hutchinson in 1990 before graduating from Georgia Southern in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in communications.
