Introduction on Book Conservation 101: Home

This guide is to help any patrons interested in preserving their books, scrapbooks, and oversized materials for long-term preservation.

Introduction

Welcome!

This LibGuide is a brief introduction on how to preserve books for Long-Term Preservation.

Innovations in Bookbinding

There are three different kinds of ways to preserve books, scrapbook, and oversized materials:

  • Sewn Pamphlet Binding: This method should only be used by certified professional conservators to sew book pages together for repair.
  • Four-flap enclosures or "Phase Box": this is a customizable box that librarians and archivist can use for quick repairs to fragle books. This method is recommended for anyone handling fragile materials more frequently.
  • Shelf files or Standard-sized pamphlets: This method is for smaller, thin books and/or pamphlets to be placed into the same four-flap method.
