Primary vs. Secondary

Primary sources are first hand accounts of an event. It is often described as being the closest to the origin of the information. 

Examples of Primary Sources include:

  • diaries
  • letters
  • memoirs
  • speeches
  • interviews

Secondary sources provide an analysis or interpretation of a primary source. 

Examples of Secondary Sources include:

  • reference books
  • textbooks
  • research papers
  • commentary
