COMP 5300 - Research Methods and Graduate Seminar: Research Assignments: Instructions

Each team is required to give a presentation on a core research area of CS/CIS. Requirements forthe presentations are as follows:
Presentations should be about 30 minutes in length
Presentation must be based off at least
10 references
Presentation content should contain the following
:
Detailed overview of Research Area
Discussion of sub-Research area
Key Achievements/Advances in this area (historical & current)
Key Researchers in this Area (people, universities, research labs, etc…)
Detailed Discussion of Current Research Problems in this Area (limit to 2-3 problems)
Identify the problem & significance of the problem
Who’s doing the research?
What is their approach/design methodology?
What are the current conclusions and implications of their work

This is an an individual assignment where you will get to gain a better understanding of how to read and critique a research paper. Assignment Description

For this assignment, you are to select two conference papers from the ACM Digital Library. One of the papers should be in an area that you are interested in, and one should be from any other area of computer science. You are to select one dissertation in an area that you are interested in from ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global. You will use the template below to review and analyze each paper and the dissertation. You will present your findings to the class.

Working individually, you are required to pick a computer science research problem and conduct research that leads to a solution to your problem or advances knowledge in some form related to your problem. Research problems should be small. You’ll have about six weeks to work on the project. You must pick an appropriate research methodology for your type of problem. Please refer to the handout posted in eCourses on picking a research topic.
