Reading Comprehension Under Time Constraints: Strategies & Resources: Reading Comprehension

Strategies and resources for speed reading and reading comprehension on standardized tests under time constraints.

Critical Reading Tips

"Questions to ask when Critically Reading a Passage: 1. Read a passage through one time without making notes, then go back through and deconstruct it. 2. Highlight, underline, circle, write in the margins as you read 3. It is always good to highlight the “main idea” or thesis of a passage, so it can be easily located later. 4. What assumptions is the author making? 5.	Is the author making any judgements? 6.Are there words or phrases you do not recognize? If so, look them up! Google is your friend. 7.	Are there any terms the author is using that are ambiguous? If so, in what ways does this open up the text to multiple interpretations? 8.Think about the time the author is writing in. In what ways does this help contextualize the meaning of the passage?"

Critical Reading Practice

Active Reading

Active reading is the process of engaging with a text as you read it. Often, people read passively — that is, we take in the information we read without questioning its validity and without making personal connections with the text. Passive reading is fine if you're reading a novel for enjoyment, but when you're reading for an assignment, test, or research project, active reading will help you get the most out of the text.

Tips for Active Reading:

  • Underline key ideas – for example, topic sentences
  • Box or circle words and phrases you want to remember
  • Place a checkmark, star, or exclamation point next to important ideas
  • Put a question mark near any unfamiliar words or phrase you need to lookup
  • Number the writer’s key supporting points or examples as you read
  • Use different color highlighters; for example, yellow for quotes you want to use, pink for ideas you want to further research
  • Write or type your thoughts in the margins
