LibGuides and Digital Literacy for the New Online Student: An Academic Reference Librarian's Approach to Faculty Collaborations

 

Program Description:

Approaching an online teaching world through faculty collaborations with Springshare LibGuides and digital literacy in this interactive session come learn the best online academic library practices in engaging faculty and designing scholarly Springshare LibGuides.  From scholarly databases to search engines to the Library of Congress Classification System and Copyright Issues to Plagiarism and Citation Style Guides, this program will explore a wealth of information pertaining to librarians and faculty in their online library teaching academic endeavors. The presentation will address, discuss and exchange innovative methods on how to use best practices for ensuring faculty and librarians make a productive online transition to library digital literacy. The program also will discuss the ACRL Standards for Literacy Competency Framework along with the American Library Associations Literacy Guide. 

Academic Bio: Kimberly M. Gay 

Kimberly Michelle Gay is Head of the Reference and Information Services Department and Academic Reference and Instruction Librarian II at the John B. Coleman Library of Prairie View A&M University- A part of the Texas A&M University System. Gay served as the Interim/Acting Head of the Reference and Information Services Department 2013-2014. She celebrated her 17th year of working for the Texas A&M System and 14-years with PVAMU this year. Gay is the Library Faculty Liaison on the main campus for: University College, College of Agriculture and Human Sciences, College of Engineering-interim, Department of Chemistry-interim, Department of Mathematics-interim, Department of Physics-interim. PVAMU service committees include: The Student Conduct Hearing Board 2012-present; Advisor- National Society of Collegiate Scholars 2010- present, Academic Affairs Technology Council 2016-2018, Organization Review Board; Women’s Leadership Council 2016- present, African- American History Month Committee 2015- present, and QEP-iREAD Academic Reading Coach 2010. She has co-edited/published three custom-made textbooks for the Department of Languages and Communications >> Public Speaking Handbook with additional readings- Pearson Custom Publishing, 2008, 2010, 2011.  Gay attended four HBUC Mellon Grant Information Literacy Leadership Institute Fellowships.  She served on 16 John B. Coleman Library Committees and chaired three. Editor of Campus-Wide Coleman Library Connections the Library electronic and print newsletter 2007-2010. She graduated from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas Magna Cum Laude 3.89 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communication (Print Journalism) with a double minor in Fashion Merchandising and Marketing & Sociology in 2003. She went on to receive a Master's Degree in Library Science and Information Studies, Suma Cum Laude 4.0 from TWU as well in May 2006.  Gay is a fifth generation Texan from Sulphur Springs, Texas and the daughter of John Curry Gay and Bobbie Nell Thomas-Gay.  Her Grandfather, Everett Scott Thomas was a Grade A Dairy Farmer for 41-years in Sulphur Springs, Texas. Gay has 19 members of her family who are PVAMU alumni since 1942. Gay is a Lifetime inductee in the Beta Lambda Chapter of Beta Phi Mu (International Library and Information Studies Honor Society).  Gay is lifetime members of Golden Key Honour Society, Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges; Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society; Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society; Cambridge Who’s Who Among Executives and Professionals2007-2008; Who’s Who Among African American Librarians 2008; American Association of University Women 2007-present; Montclair Who's Who in Collegiate Faculty™ 2010-2011; Marquis Who's Who in America 2015 Edition. Three of her most cherished accomplishments at Texas Woman’s University were winning the Outstanding Campus Leader Award for May 2001, winning the Outstanding Senior Award for May 2003 and being the 2003 TWU Class Agent.
